These durable phoneme frames are used for building words from 2 to 4 phonemes in length with foam magnetic letters. Each frame provides an outline or template so that children can see that words are made up of different phonemes, and that phonemes can be represented by one letter or in the case of digraphs more than one letter. This teaching approach is referred to extensively in the Letters and Sounds programme across the Phases 2 - 5. The variety of phoneme frame sizes means that children can begin with simple VC and CVC word forms, and build up to more complicated structures as their experience and confidence grows.

2 x 2 Frames (120mm x 70mm)

8 x 3 Frames (180mm x 70mm)

6 x 4 Frames (230mm x 70mm)

 

Instructions:

Choose frames at an appropriate level for the students.
1. Say the CVC word (e.g. bat) and then say it in sound-talk.
2. Say another CVC word (e.g. cat) and ask the children to tell their partners what it would be in sound-talk.
3. Demonstrate finding the letters c, a and t from the selection of magnetic letters and put them in the squares.
4. Say another CVC word (e.g. can) and ask the children to tell their partners what it would be in sound-talk.

5. Ask the children to tell you what to put in the first square in the phoneme frame and then in the second etc.

7. If all the children have frames, ask them to check that they have the same answer as their partners. If the children are sharing, they ask their partners whether they agree.
8. Ask the children to hold up their frames for you to see.
