The fourth phase of the six-phase Letters and Sounds programme should be taught for the last 12 weeks of Reception. Phase 4 covers adjacent consonants CVCC, CCVC, CCVCC, CCCVC & CVCCC words. Phase 4b covers common word endings such as  -ing, -ed, -est, -ey, -y, -le, -ve

Our Letters and Sounds Phase 4 decodable readers only contain GPCs (letter sounds) that a child has already learnt and a few tricky words that are explicitly taught. The programme teaches the skills of blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. It progresses through all sounds, working from the simple to the more complex. By following the progression, children build on their growing phonic knowledge. They quickly learn to read and spell, having fun along the way. For more information please click here or to view our phonic progression with word examples click here.
