The fifth phase of the six-phase Letters and Sounds programme should be taught throughout Year 1. Phase 5 covers nearly all the alternative spellings of the 44 sounds learnt in phases 2 & 3.

Our Letters and Sounds Phase 5 decodable readers only contain GPCs (letter sounds) that a child has already learnt and a few tricky words that are explicitly taught. The programme teaches the skills of blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. It progresses through all sounds, working from the simple to the more complex. By following the progression, children build on their growing phonic knowledge. They quickly learn to read and spell, having fun along the way. For more information please click here or to view our phonic progression with word examples click here.
